There are many cases where depression is caused by extreme exhaustion, resulting from insomnia or sleep deprivation. There are many reasons why a person may not be able to get the sleep that they need, but the resulting toll can be hard on the body and mind. Lack of sleep often causes more stress on the physical body and can increase the chances of heart problems or other health problems. The stress on the mind can also cause problems in the form of increased anxiety, increased sudden mood changes and depression. Depression is a relatively common result of sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep can cause a person to become more emotional, have difficulty in thinking rationally and can make a person more irritable; it can also make it more difficult for the person to let things go that would not normally bother them.

It could be that the person is not getting the right foods, exercise or time off, but it could also be a result of issues from the past that need to be dealt with.
